Case Notes:

Maureen Gildart, is a doyen of the ex service community in Penrith NSW, where she "sports" a Military Police scarlet beret together with a National Service Association Jacket, complete with six medals. The four on her right breast we assume are those of a close relative. Of the two on her left breast one is a fake.

The first medal is the Australian Defence Medal to which she is entitled, the other, the Anniversary of National Service Medal, is a fake that was not issued to her or any other female soldiers.

No Australian women served in either of the Australian Defence Force National Service Schemes, from 1951 to 1972, for which the medal was awarded.

It is an offence under the Defence Act to wear a medal that was not awarded, and therefore as an ex Military Police person, she may, as an act of contrition, choose to charge herself and apologize to the Returned and Services League Sub Branch, Penrith and the Penrith National Servicemen's Association where she holds executive positions.

Welcome aboard Maureen.
