3. Australian Defence Medal. Not entitled. Purchased.

You will notice that Bettison is not wearing the Australian Active Service Medal (AASM) with two clasps. Iraq and ICAT (ICAT - International Coalition Against Terror) The AASM is a pre-requisite for the wearing of Australian Active Service campaign medals and ribands. If genuine, Bettison would be wearing the AASM as the first medal on his rack, followed by the three purchased medals he displays. An example of the AASM, with a clasp, appears below.

Bettison

Bettison has claimed that he served in the Royal Australian Navy for 10 years on HMAS Tobruk and was awarded medals for Iraq and Afghanistan deployments.

Inquiries with relative Military Associations concluded that Bettison has never served in the Australia Defence Force, let alone having deployed on active service to Iraq and Afghanistan. He is not entitled to any of the three medals that he wears.

As a Protocol Officer in the NSW Police Force, he sets a very bad example by purchasing unearned medals from the internet or Medal Dealers, and fraudulently wearing them on his Police uniform at ceremonial occasions. He lacks credibility and integrity.

Bettison was contacted on two occasions, and offered an opportunity to explain his wearing of Australian Military Awards on his NSW Police uniform. He declined to respond on both occasions.

Bettison has committed offences under the Defence Act 1903, Section 80A -;

DEFENCE ACT 1903 - SECT 80A
Falsely representing to be returned soldier, sailor or airman
(1) A person commits an offence if:
(a) the person represents himself or herself to be a returned soldier, sailor or airman; and
(b) the representation is false.

Penalty: 30 penalty units or imprisonment for 6 months, or both.

(2) For the purposes of this section:
(a) returned soldier means a person who has served abroad during any war as a member of any Military Force raised in Australia or in any other part of the British Empire, or as a member of the Military Forces of any Ally of Great Britain;
(b) returned sailor means a person who has served abroad during any war as a member of any Naval Force raised in Australia or in any other part of the British Empire, or as a member of the Naval Forces of any Ally of Great Britain; and
(c) returned airman means a person who has served abroad during any war as a member of any Air Force, air service or flying corps raised in Australia or in any other part of the British Empire or as a member of the air forces of any Ally of Great Britain.

and 80B -;

DEFENCE ACT 1903 - SECT 80B
Improper use of service decorations
(1) A person commits an offence if:
(a) the person wears a service decoration; and
(b) the person is not the person on whom the decoration was conferred.

Penalty: 30 penalty units or imprisonment for 6 months, or both.

However, we are aware that the NSW Police Force is reluctant to pursue these matters through the Courts for some reason. Other States take action where appropriate. Bettison’s recruitment application should be checked to ascertain if any other offences have been committed, prior to his acceptance for service in the NSW Police.

Bettison joins other NSW Police Force colleagues on this website, who have also fraudulently worn un-entitled Australian Military Awards on their Police uniforms..

Michael John Joyce served with RAAF Number 1 Operational Support Unit in Vung Tau Vietnam for 91 days from 16 April 1970 until 15 July 1970 as a Cook. Here is a photograph of Joyce:

Michael Joyce

Notice that Joyce is wearing four medals these are:

Australian Active Service Medal
Vietnam Medal
Australian Defence Medal
Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (RVCM) - NOT ENTITLED

Joyce has made the mistake of being a cheat involved with the media and had his photograph published in a newspaper. As a result of his need for media fame it has been established that Joyce is not entitled to wear the RVCM because he did not meet the criteria of 181 days service in Vietnam and was not evacuated to Australia as a Battle Casualty. He served for 91 days only.

Joyce3

Here is the official criterion for being awarded the medal.

Joyce4

Here is what Joyce said about the matter:

Dear xxx,
Yes i did not spend the required time in Vietnam And as you know there has at times been eligibility question I was Medivaced home. And subsequently was awarded The medal in question, this would be shown in the appropriate Records that are available to the public. I have previously Discussed this with fellow veterans, and the consensus was That if it was officially awarded then that would be that.

Yours Truly
Mick Joyce.

Wearing the medal on the basis of a consensus of fellow veterans was insufficient authority to attach the medal to his rack.

Like Joyce, most of those caught wearing this medal say "It was issued to them" In most cases that is baloney and it has been purchased by the wearer. Joyce wears four medals, he is entitled to three.

Returned Veterans will not tolerate those who cheat with medals. Being a returned veteran is a status hard won and the awards they receive are sacrosanct.

Herbert Alec Mason, President of a Victorian RSL Sub Branch, was another non battle casualty from Vietnam, who falsely claimed that he was issued with the VCM.

We thank the genuine veterans and the many others throughout Australia, who through their diligence and observation are striving to preserve our medals protocols and heritage.

Joyce is welcomed to the website for being a medal cheat.

Service: Royal Air Force (RAF)
Branch: Pilot
Case Notes:

Guy Slocum is either a complete fraud, or is an RAF Fighter Pilot who exaggerates his service.

There are other retired RAF and RNZAF Pilots residing in New Zealand who noticed Slocum's recent publicity, and knowing that some of what he has said is bunkum, pointed us in his direction.

An RAF Squadron Leader named Guy Slocum is mentioned in the London Gazette, where occurrences relating to RAF Officers are published. We don't know whether this is the same person or a person who has stolen the identity.

Here is what Slocum has said at Rotary Club meetings in Auckland

He could have flown some of the aircraft listed, but there is a comprehensive list of Lightning pilots and Slocum is not included: See here: www.lightningpilots.com/Directory.html

We have reports from ex RAF and RNZAF pilots who attended the meetings when Slocum was the guest speaker. Here are excerpts from their reports:

"Hello xx,

Yes, I attended his talk at the Warbirds at Ardmore. Essentially the same talk as described in your two attachments, though I can not recall him mention being the youngest pilot. He did describe the 3 key events; refuelling, Tupolev incident and Libyan dogfight, fairly much as narrated.

XXXX"

From: XXXXXX

"Yes, he definitely repeated the Bear/Lightning ejection story and the Libyan MiG one.

He could get away with it to a few old dears at the Rotary Club, but I'm surprised he tried it at the Warbirds where he must know there are current and former RAF and RNZAF pilots and engineers.

I attended the briefing at the Warbirds and not a single person with any relevant knowledge believed him.

XXXXXX"

Hi xx

The two attached reports are the same as what was included in the NZ Warbirds event – though I don’t recall him mentioning being the youngest pilot/youngest Sqn Ldr. He may well have mentioned this – but I don’t recall it.

Kind regards, xxxxxxx

We asked Slocum to please comment on his "Russian" North Sea Adventure and his "Dog fight" in Libya:

"Afternoon Guy

To diffuse the current situation regarding your RAF service, can you please confirm in statement form, all that has been published regarding your RAF service.. In particular information about your action in Libya and your interaction with a Russian Aircraft.

Details from you should settle the matter.

Regards

I am not at liberty to discuss any issues relating to my RAF Career with anyone I do not know and who is not prepared to fully identify themselves. Moreover, I disown any such activities as you mention

Please do not trouble me again

regards"

Notice that Guy disowns the heroic bits of his history. Other ex pilots have declared Slocum as a fantasist.

Slocum has told the stories, and now denies having told them, despite his very public presentations.

He has earned a seat on ANZMI flight 101 from which there is no ejection seat.

Robert (Bob) John Hutchinson was born on the 12 April, 1957. He served in the New Zealand Army from 1974 to 1989 in the Royal New Zealand Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Hutchinson is a medal cheat and a valour thief.

In the above photograph Hutchinson is wearing the following medals -;

1. New Zealand Operational Service Medal. (Not entitled)

The New Zealand Operational Service Medal is a New Zealand campaign medal for award to New Zealanders who have served on operations since 3 September 1945. Eligibility for the NZ OSM commences the day after the final eligibility date for the 1939 - 45 New Zealand War Service Medal.

2. New Zealand General Service Medal 1992 (Sinai Clasp) Non War Like. (Not entitled)

The New Zealand General Service Medal 1992 (Non-Warlike) is a New Zealand campaign medal, authorised in 1992, for award to New Zealanders who have served in peacekeeping operations for which no separate UN medal was issued.

3. New Zealand Defence Service Medal. (Regular Clasp.) (Entitled)

4. Multinational Force and Observers medal (Sinai) (Not entitled)

The Multinational Force and Observers Medal is an international military decoration that was first created on March 24, 1982. The medal was established under the authority of the Director-General of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) which were established to monitor a neutral ceasefire zone, between Egypt and Israel, as the result of the Yom Kippur War of 1973.

Hutchinson raised concerns among Veterans when he wore his medal rack at recent Anzac Day and Armistice Day Services at Rotorua. He was eventually approached by New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association (R&SA) members who notified him of those concerns. He denied that the medals were not officially issued to him and claimed that they were legitimately awarded. .

He was then informed that inquiries were made through official sources and that evidence disclosed that he had never been awarded the three medals in question. He again denied the accusation and claimed that the information gleaned was wrong.

However, he could not provide written proof of the awards.

ANZMI has been investigating Hutchinson for some time. There is not a doubt that Hutchinson has never been awarded the three medals indicated. He is a Medal cheat and a valour thief who has treated his fellow RSA members and the community with contempt. If he is still a member of the RSA, he should be directed to apologise and then given the boot.

Genuine veterans will not sit idle and watch medal cheats and imposters parade with them on official remembrance days.

Hutchinson is the Co-owner of the Rotorua Art Café. Next time you visit there, ask him where and when he served in Sinai, and which operational campaign he served in to receive his Operational Service Medal. You might also ask to see his medals. They should all be engraved with his name and service number on the rims.

Let us know his response at enquiries@anzmi.net and we will give him an update!

Our forever watchful friends, advise that SARDON has adopted a new name.

Any person now checking the name INIESTA will be referred to SARDON, where all that we know of him is listed.

Matthew James SARDON - UPDATE JULY 2019

Matthew James Sardon is a recidivist liar and wannabe who has moved from Western Australia to now reside Edithvale, Melbourne Victoria.

Sardon still has the guile of a snake and the morals of an ally cat, he strikes wherever he can find a vulnerable target. He then extols his disgraceful lies about his less than auspicious military service as described in our original exposure.

A soldier's record is now referred to as his PMKeys file. Each soldier is allocated a unique PMKeys number that identifies him throughout his career. Sardon has created a false PMKeys military document falsely and unscrupulously reflecting exceptional accomplishments as an elite Special Air Services Regiment (SASR) Corporal.

Here are excerpts from the fake document:

Once again we offer a warning, that although Sardon is debonair, handsome and claims to be a war damaged veteran, he is nothing like that. In reality he is a failed soldier, a wannabe, valour thief and medals cheat, whose intentions are dishonest and immoral.

As long as Sardon spreads is vile false persona, we will record his movements and his actions.

****

Mathew Sardon enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on the 1 June, 2012. Following initial training, he was posted to 4 Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery as an observer

Sardon is a classic military imposter. He is a wannabee, valour thief and medal cheat.

He is also a failed soldier who never deployed outside Australia during his 2 years and 8 months in the ARA. He subsequently transferred to the Australian Army part time Reserves, (ARes), where his services were terminated in June 2016.

Yet, to look at his impressive rack of medals, anyone would naturally conclude that he is/was a highly decorated member of the Australian Defence Force, who has been deployed on dangerous war like service.

In the below photographs, Sardon wears the following medals -;

Sardon

Sardon

1. Australian Active Service Medal with two clasps - Afghanistan and Iraq.
2. Afghanistan Medal
3. Iraq Medal.
4. Australian Defence Medal.
5. NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Medal. Operation Slipper, Afghanistan.

Above his medals he is wearing the -;

6. Australian Infantry Combat Badge. (ICB)
7. The Australian Returned from Active Service Badge. (RASB)

Sardon is not entitled to wear any of the medals or the two badges mentioned above.

He has purchased the entire lot to fraudulently represent himself to others that he is the real deal, a returned veteran with an impressive Australian Defence Force career. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In the below exchange, Sardon infers that he is deployed on warlike service with United States Marines. It seems that this imposter will resort to any means available to maintain a façade to others about his false military service.

Sardon 3

We have statements that Sardon did not complete one bush training exercise during his limited regular Army service, due to his unsuitability to Army life.

Not everyone is suited to the harsh realities of Australian Defence Force service, and ANZMI is not critical of Sardon’s inability to carry out his allotted field duties.

However, ANZMI is critical of Sardon’s poor decisions to embellish his service and create a false military history to gain benefits and undeserved recognition, by stealing the valour of others who have “done the hard yards”

Due to his dishonest and illegal behaviour, Mathew Sardon has now gained deserved recognition on this site.

Sardon has committed offences under the Defence Act 1903, Sections 80A and 80B.
(Falsely representing himself to be a returned soldier and improper use of service decorations.).

ANZMI will continue to ferret out these imposters for as long as they offend, and for as long as we have the support of the Australian and New Zealand veteran community and the general public.
